How Many Additives are in the Engine Oil? A Minimal Introduction of Engine Oil Additives

Various additives are used in engine oil to improve its quality and make it economical. Here, we will use the simplest words to describe the common engine oil additives and their effects.

Engine oil additives can be divided into:

Anti-wear additives, detergents, dispersants, antioxidants, corrosion and rust inhibitors, friction reducers, viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants, anti-foaming additives, and other additives

1. Extreme Pressure Anti-wear Additives

Purpose: To reduce friction and wear.
Typical compounds: compounds containing sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine, lead, etc.
Such as sulfurized olefins, chlorinated paraffin, ZDDP, borate, etc., the EP Additives form adsorption or reaction films on the friction surface and protect the friction surface.

2. Detergent

Purpose: To maintain the cleanliness of the friction surface and neutralize the acidic substances in the engine oil.
Typical compounds: sulfonates, alkylphenols, alkyl salicylates, etc

3. Dispersant

Purpose: To keep insoluble substances in the oil suspended and not deposited in the oil passage or friction pair, preventing further condensation

Typical compounds: ester compounds with long chains, e.g. Polyisobutylene Succinimide.

4. Antioxidants

Purpose: To prevent oxidation of lubricating oil

Typical compounds: phenolic salts, ZDDP, amine salts, sulfur/phosphorus compounds, etc., are generally used to protect lubricating oil by sacrificing themselves

5. Metal deactivators

Purpose: To prevent corrosion of non-ferrous metals and prevent rusting of ferrous metals

Typical compound: Oil-containing compound with polarity. Generally, it protects by adsorbing onto the metal surface

6. Viscosity index improver

Purpose: To improve the viscosity-temperature performance of engine oil and obtain the required viscosity performance.

Typical compounds: Polymer compounds or polymers, such as PIB, OCP, HSD, PMA

7. Pour point depressant

Purpose: To reduce the pour point of engine oil

Typical compounds: Generally polymer compounds with polar groups, such as polymethyl methacrylate, alkylnaphthalene, etc

8. Anti foaming additives

Purpose: reduce the foam generated in the use of lubricating oil or eliminate the foam in time

Typical compounds: generally methyl silicone oil or polyacrylate compounds

Add additives to the base oil, we get the engine oil?

It is not simple, as unknown interactions may occur between different additives.

The more additives in the engine oil, the better.

No, and there is also an appropriate dosage for the additives.

The quality of engine oil only depends on the additives?
The quality of engine oil not only depends on the additive and the formula but also on the performance of the base oil, which is crucial for the performance of the finished engine oil.
