Sulfonates are the earliest rust inhibitors. The most commonly used rust inhibitor is barium sulfonate, followed by sodium sulfonate and calcium sulfonate. Ammonium sulfonate is also used as an ashless rust inhibitor in addition to metal sulfonates.
These polar chemicals can enhance rust prevention performance by forming a more complete and uniform coat on the metal surface. Sulfonates have an affinity for metals and can remove moisture from the metal surface. Metal sulfonates also help dissolve wax and oxidized wax in liquids.
Barium petroleum sulfonate
Most barium sulfonates used as rust inhibitors are neutral and low-alkaline. Barium petroleum sulfonate has good rust prevention and salt spray resistance, has a displacement effect on sweat and water film, and is suitable for a variety of metals.
The general dosage of barium petroleum sulfonate in rust-proof grease is 3%~10%. It is normally used in combination with zinc naphthenate, lanolin magnesium soap, and other corrosion inhibitors in a real formula.
Neutral Barium Sulfonate Chorus-404
Chorus 404 is a premium anti-rust additive, which is a high molecular weight, oil-soluble neutral barium sulfonate. It is made by neutralizing heavy alkyl benzene sulfonic acid with barium hydroxide.
Calcium petroleum sulfonate
Calcium petroleum sulfonate is non-toxic and is mainly used to prepare anti-rust grease for food machinery and medical equipment. Its anti-rust effect is similar to that of barium petroleum sulfonate, but it is generally considered to be slightly worse than barium petroleum sulfonate. Neutral calcium sulfonate is used as a rust inhibitor.
High ash and high alkalinity calcium sulfonate is mostly used in internal combustion engine oil as a detergent dispersant and rust preventive.
Basic Calcium Dinonylnaphthalene Sulfonate (Carbonated) Chorus Ca-29C
Carbonated Basic calcium dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate (Chorus Ca-29C) is an excellent oil-soluble anti-rust additive with an alkalinity reserve.
Neutral Calcium Dinonylnaphthalene Sulfonate Chorus Ca-29N
Neutral calcium dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate (Chorus Ca-29N) is an excellent oil-soluble anti-rust additive and anti-emulsifier, widely used in various industrial lubricant applications where rust protection and water resistance are required.
Sodium petroleum sulfonate
Sodium petroleum sulfonate is easily soluble in oil and has hydrophilicity. Sodium petroleum sulfonate with a molecular weight of 550~600 has the best anti-rust property, and sodium petroleum sulfonate with a molecular weight of 450~500 has good emulsification. Sodium petroleum sulfonate is rarely used alone for anti-rust properties and is mainly used to prepare emulsified metal processing lubricants.

Barium dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate
Barium dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate has similar basic properties to barium petroleum sulfonate, and has certain resistance to salt spray and salt water immersion; its oil solubility is better than barium petroleum sulfonate, and it can be dissolved in silicone oil. The general dosage is 2%~5%, and it is often used in combination with dodecenylsuccinic acid.
Neutral barium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate has good rust resistance and demulsification properties.
Dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate anti-rust additives (rust inhibitors) are usually sold in liquid form. Blend the additives with solvents, such as lubricant base oil, white oil, kerosene, etc. We may produce various rust-prevention oils with various concentrations for various uses.
