Long-Term Rust Preventive Oil: Effective Protection for Metals in Marine Shipping

Overseas shipping is the backbone of global logistics; however, the high-humidity and high-salinity marine environment makes mechanical components, metal workpieces, and precision-machined parts extremely vulnerable to corrosion.

Rust Preventive Oils are critical protective measures. If the oil's performance is insufficient or applied incorrectly, components and large-scale electromechanical equipment can still succumb to rust during long-haul transit, leading to significant financial losses.

As China's metalworking and manufacturing sectors continue to expand their export footprint, machined parts often require extended storage or transport phases. From heavy machinery to precision spare parts and cutting tools, many standard rust preventatives fail to maintain reliability under harsh maritime conditions. Therefore, effective anti-rust solutions must meet stringent requirements, including high humidity resistance and salt spray resistance.

Applications: Maritime Rust Preventive Oils are ideal for the ultra-long-term protection of equipment, precision parts, hardware, cutting tools, molds, and various metal products.

Key Performance Requirements for Maritime Antirust oil

1. Why do rust preventive oils need excellent salt spray and humidity resistance?

Ocean Freight traverses multiple climate zones with fluctuating temperatures. When warm, humid air inside a container cools, it condenses into water droplets on the cargo surfaces – this is known as 'cargo sweat'." These water droplets contain high concentrations of salts (primarily Sodium Chloride, but also Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Sulfate, etc.).

In tropical and subtropical regions, active chloride ions create a highly corrosive environment, leading to mold, rust, and corrosion on mechanical parts. For Metalworking Facility, this poses a high risk of product damage, cargo rejection, and costly warranty claims.

Therefore, a rust preventive oil must be selected that offers strong salt spray resistance, high humidity resistance, and long-term rust prevention. Only such a product can form an effective protective coating on the metal surface, providing a reliable barrier against the high heat, humidity, and salt exposure encountered during ocean transport.

e.g.: A batch of metal workpieces shipped to Southeast Asia experienced corrosion upon arrival due to the lack of a salt-spray-resistant oil, resulting in substantial economic losses.

2. Excellent Adhesion and Barrier Properties

Rust Preventive Oils formulations typically contain polar molecules such as Sulfonates, Carboxylic Acids, and Esters. These molecules adsorb onto the metal to form a protective film; Concurrently, by working synergistically with film-forming agents (such as oxidized waxes), they ensure that the metal workpiece is thoroughly enveloped by the rust-preventive coating, thereby effectively inhibiting electrochemical corrosion at its source.

How to Use Rust Preventive Oil?

Rust preventive oil can be applied directly to metal surfaces to form a protective film and is specifically designed for ferrous metals.

After cleaning the metal surface to remove oil stains and dust, apply a thin layer of oil, brushing for small areas or spraying with a gun for larger surfaces. Allow the coating to stand and form a complete film before packaging or transportation.

Note: Select the appropriate product type based on the metal. For non‑ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper, use a dedicated formula to avoid compromising the anti‑rust effect.
