Lubricant PMA Pour Point Depressant (PPD) Selection Guide from Chorus

As industrial equipment operates in increasingly extreme conditions, the low-temperature fluidity of lubricating oils has become a prominent issue. PMA pour point depressants, as key additives that serve the dual functions of depressing the pour point and improving the viscosity index, are becoming a core direction for upgrading lubricating oil formulations.

What is a lubricating pour point depressant?

Lubricating pour point depressants (PPDs) are important lubricating oil additives that effectively lower the pour point and cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of lubricating oils and fuel oils, ensuring their efficiency during storage, transportation, and use in low-temperature environments.

Mechanism of Pour Point Depressants

As the temperature drops, the paraffin wax components in the base oil precipitate as flake-like crystals,  interlock with one another, forming a three-dimensional network structure that "locks" the oil and causes it to lose mobility. Pour point depressants intervene during the wax crystal formation phase to keep these crystals fine and dispersed, thereby maintaining the low-temperature fluidity.

Classification of Pour Point Depressants

Currently, commonly used industrial pour point depressants include PMA (polymethacrylate), EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate), poly-alpha-olefins (PAO), and alkyl naphthalenes. Among these, PMA pour point depressants are the most widely used in high-end lubricating oil formulations because they serve dual functions: depressing the pour point and improving viscosity index (VII).

Chorus provides the lubricating industry with a wide range of lubricating additives, including PMA PPD Chorus T602 is suitable for various lubricants, such as engine oils, gear oils, and hydraulic oils, making it particularly well-suited for medium-to-low viscosity formulations with Group I, II, and III base oils.

Chorus T248 is a versatile polymethacrylate PPD applicable to a variety of base stocks, including API Group II, API Group III, Group III+, and hydrotreated base oils, offering greater advantages for high-viscosity formulation , gear, and hydraulic oils, making it particularly well-suited for medium-to-low-viscositybase oils. What are the advantages of Chorus PMA PPDs?

Outstanding Pour Point Depressing Effect and Low-Temperature Performance

Chorus PMA PPDs are known for high efficiency and long durability. By inhibiting wax crystallization through a unique co-crystallization network mechanism, a dosage of just 0.1%–0.5% can reduce the pour point by 15–25°C. They exhibit strong versatility across Group I–III base oils and show particularly excellent results in medium-to-low viscosity oil products (such as 150SN).

Dual Functions: Pour Point Depressing and Viscosity Modifying

Chorus PMA (polymethacrylate) PPD is not only a pour point depressant, but it also possesses the ability to improve the viscosity index. By introducing appropriate polar groups and alkyl chain lengths into the molecular structure, it achieves the dual effects of depressing the pour point and increasing viscosity. This characteristic gives it a significant advantage when formulating multigrade oils.

Broad Adaptability and Compatibility

Whether applied to traditional Group I solvent-refined base oils or hydrotreated Group II and Group III base oils, PMA pour point depressants demonstrate excellent adaptability. For example, Chorus T-602 shows outstanding pour point depressing effects even in high-viscosity base oils (such as S-Oil SSS-500N), solving the problem of traditional pour point depressants performing poorly in high-viscosity base oils.

Engineered with a narrow molecular weight distribution design, Chorus PMA PPD possesses exceptional shear stability. Its molecular chains are resistant to breaking under mechanical shear, thereby making sure that the lubricating oil maintains long-lasting, stable low-temperature performance throughout its entire service life. It is suitable for engine oils, gear oils, hydraulic oils, and other lubricants.

PMA pour-point depressants are free-radical solution-polymerization copolymers (in which R/R′ are C1-C22 alkyl groups). Their pour-point-depressing activity is independent of molecular weight (degree of polymerization ranging from 200 to 2000), and general-purpose types mostly opt for the lower-molecular-weight end (degree of polymerization ~200, molecular weight under 100,000). The R group must be linear with at least 14 carbon atoms and chain length matching the wax structure. It becomes effective when the average carbon number of the side chains is 12, with C14 esters yielding the optimal results.

Structure of PMA Pour-Point Depressants

The pour point depressing effect of PMA is mainly influenced by four factors:

Side-chain structure:

The carbon number of the side chains must match the carbon number of the wax in the oil; a broad distribution (C12–C20) provides better universality.

Wax content:

It is most effective in paraffinic base oils with high wax content (>5%), while displaying poor susceptibility in low-wax synthetic oils.

Cooling rate:

Fast cooling facilitates the co-crystallization and adsorption mechanisms, whereas slow cooling diminishes the effect.

Compatibility:

nterference from other additives (such as dispersants, detergents, and extreme pressure agents) may affect migration efficiency, requiring verification of formula compatibility.

Chorus is a professional supplier of lubricating oil additives. In addition to pour point depressants, we also offer additives and packages for rust prevention, extreme pressure, anti-oxidation, and more. Feel free to contact us to discover more customized solutions.
