A lubricant pour point depressant, also called a lubricant flow improver, is mainly an oil-soluble high molecular organic compound or polymer that reduces the pour point of engine oil and improves low-temperature fluidity.
What affects the pour point of lubricant Oils?
Generally speaking, the main reason that affects the low-temperature fluidity of lubricating oil is the wax in the mineral base oil.
Wax refers to the long-chain normal alkanes, isoalkanes, and cyclic hydrocarbons with very long side chains in the oil. Because of its high freezing point and low solubility with other hydrocarbons in the oil, these waxes gradually precipitate from the oil when the temperature goes down, forming crystals and connecting into a crystal network, thereby the oil fluidity goes down and even solidifies.
The higher the wax content in the base oil, the greater the amount of wax precipitated at low temperatures and the higher the pour point of the oil.
How does a lubricant pour point depressant work?
At an appropriate treat rate, the pour point depressant interacts with the wax crystals in the oil, it can significantly reduce the freezing point of the waxy oil, and improve the low-temperature flow properties of the waxy oil.
Which base oils do PMA PPD have a good pour point depressing effect on?
PMA pour point depressant has a good pour point depressing effect on Group I mineral oils, Group II and Group III hydrogenated base oils containing a small amount of paraffin, and also has a significant pour point depressing effect on GTL base oils.
Does Polymethacrylate( PMA) PPD have a pour point depressing effect on Poly-alpha-olefin (PAO)?
PMA pour point depressant has a good pour point depressing effect on mineral oils and GTL base oils. But it has almost no pour-point depressing on poly-alpha-olefin (PAO).
