Gears and Gear Oil

Industrial Gear Oil Types

By Standard AGMA 9005 (American Gear Manufacturers Association)

Inhibited oils (RO)
These are commonly referred to as rust and oxidation inhibited, or R&O lubricants. They are formulated with highly refined petroleum or synthetic base oils and contain additives that enhance oxidation stability, provide corrosion protection, and suppress foam. Their superior oxidation stabilities typically set them apart from other gear oil types. However, their load-carrying capabilities (as measured by standard tests that assess these characteristics) may be less than others. These oils are generally associated with higher speed and lighter load applications.

Antiscuff/antiwear oils (EP)
In addition to protection against corrosion and oxidation, these oils contain additives which provide protection against unacceptable wear and scuffing. These oils are formulated with refined petroleum or synthetic base oils. They are generally used in ISO VGs of 150 and above, and were developed to protect geared systems operating at high loads and severe impact or reversal conditions.

Compounded oils (CP)
Compounded gear oils are a blend of petroleum base oils with three to ten percent of natural or synthetic fatty oils. These lubricants are frequently used in worm gear drives.

Gear oil classification:

Gear Oil Type Formula
R&O Mineral oil + antioxidant + rust inhibitor (without EP additives)
EP Mineral oil + EP additives ( sulfur-phosphorus extreme pressure agents)
CP Mineral oil + fatty oil or synthetic ester (generally used for worm gears)

Vehicle Gear Oil Types

By API 1560-2013《Lubricant Service Designations for Automotive Manual Transmissions, Manual Transaxles, and Axles》

ITEM Applications Remarks / Status
GL-4 Intended for spiral-bevel and hypoid gears operating under severe conditions of speed and load, and for manual transmissions and drive axles. Note: While this service designation remains in commercial use for describing such products, the performance test hardware is no longer available. Still referenced commercially, but performance test rigs are unavailable.
GL-5 Intended for gears, particularly hypoid gears in automotive axles, operating under high-speed/shock-load or low-speed/high-torque conditions. Current mainstream standard.
MT-1 Intended for non-synchronized manual transmissions used in buses and heavy-duty trucks. Provides protection against thermal degradation, component wear, and deterioration of oil seals – performance features not provided by GL-4 or GL-5 oils. Specifically for non-synchronized manual transmissions.

General-Purpose Gear Oil Additive Packages

Since the EP/AW additives used in modern automotive and industrial gear oils are essentially similar, general-purpose gear oil additive packages have emerged. These compound formulations are designed to meet the performance of both automotive and industrial gear oils.
When blending the gear oils, the operator simply adjusts the treat rate of the additive package to get the desired class of gear oils.

Recommended Treat Rate of Multifunctional Gear Oil Additive Package T4218

Performance Level Treat Rate (wt%)
API GL-5 3.8
API GL-4 1.9
Heavy Load Industrial Gear Oil 1.5
Low/Medium Load Industrial Gear Oil 1
