What is a rust inhibitor?

Rust or corrosion inhibitors are chemicals usually added to an oil or grease to help decrease the corrosion rate of metals(generally, iron,steel and other ferrous metal). These chemical additives are also called: anti-rust additives, rust inhibitors, rust preventives, rust preventative and corrosion inhibitors.

Generally rust inhibitors are divided into five categories: sulfonates, carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid derivatives, esters, organic phosphates and salts, organic amines and heterocyclic compounds.
Sulfonates, is one of the main metal surface treatment additives. such as barium petroleum sulfonate, sodium petroleum sulfonate, sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate, barium dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate, zinc dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate, Neutral calcium dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate, etc. These sulfonate type corrosion inhibitors can be firmly adsorbed on the metal surfaces to form a protective film with anti-rust performance.
