Metal Deactivator （Metal passivator）Additives & Corrosion Inhibitor Additives， these lubricant additives form a dense protective film on the metal surface. This chemical film can prevent active sulfur, organic acids, or free radicals from attacking the metal surface, protecting the metal ( mainly copper or copper alloys) surface.
and they also have a metal deactivation function: that is, react with metal and metal ions to produce stable chelates, which can prevent metal ions from entering the lubricating oil and shield the catalytic oxidation activity of metal ions on the oil. so it is also an important part to prevent oxidation in lubricants.
How to select the proper copper corrosion inhibitor for your lubricant formula, DMTD or TTA?
Tolutriazole (TTA) derivative metal deactivators are sensitive to active sulfur and are suitable for low-active-sulfur or sulfur-free systems.
The sulfur-containing structure of dithiothiadiazole derivatives (DMTD) is naturally suitable for high-sulfur formulations and can enhance extreme pressure performance through sulfur-copper bonds, making it suitable for gear oils, metalworking fluids, etc. They are more suitable for formulations with high active-sulfur-containing formulations.

Copper Corrosion Test (150°C, 3h) (Standard ASTM D130): Formulation: base oil 99% + 1% sulfided olefins
TTA 39: Corrosion Level ≥ 3 (severe corrosion)
DMTD-484: Corrosion Level ≤ 1b (slight corrosion)
The protective film of the TTA derivative decomposes faster at high temperatures (>120°C) in a sulfur-containing formula.
DMTD derivatives remain stable in sulfur-containing oils even at higher temperatures ( 200°C).
