How does the viscosity index improver (VII) work?
Viscosity index improvers are like the “smart thickeners” in lubricating. It hides when it’s cold to keep the oil thin and easy to run. And when it’s hot, it stretches out to increase the volume and prevent the oil from becoming too thin. Viscosity modifiers play a central role in maintaining the viscosity of the lubricant, which changes minimally with temperature, thereby improving the viscosity index. And it’s helpful to ensure the engine gets well lubricated at all temperatures.
Viscosity Modifiers Performance
A good viscosity index improver should exhibit good thickening ability initially, but its shear stability limits it. That’s to say, based on qualified shear stability, the greater the thickening capacity, the better. Secondly, viscosity improvers should have good low-temperature performance and thermal oxidation stability, and have good compatibility with other additives of internal combustion engine oil.
