Extreme Pressure & Anti-Wear Additives for lubricants and Metal Working Fluids

Extreme Pressure & Anti-Wear Additive (EP/AW Additive) is an additive designed to prevent wear and welding of metal surfaces under high-pressure & high-temperature conditions. They are widely used in modern lubricant formulations.

Chorus® offers a wide range of EP/AW Additives for engine oils, gear oils, hydraulic oils, compressor oils, metalworking fluids, greases, and other lubricants at competitive prices.

Chorus® also offers MoDDP & MoDTC (Organic Molybdenum Friction Modifier).

FAQ about the EP & Anti-Wear Additives

Q: What are the main differences between Friction Modifiers, Anti-Wear Additives and Extreme Pressure Additives?

A: According to boundary lubrication theory, these lubricant additives work at different load-carrying conditions.
Friction modifiers: mainly used to reduce friction coefficient and improve fuel economy, suitable for low load, low temperature or mild working conditions (e.g., energy-saving lubricants).
Anti-wear Additives: used to reduce metal wear under medium load, (e.g., engine oils, hydraulic oils).
Extreme Pressure Additives: specially designed for high load, high temperature, and extreme boundary lubrication conditions to prevent metal surface welding and severe wear (e.g., gear oils, cutting fluids).

Q: What are the differences in the load capacity of extreme pressure & anti-wear additives?

A: Their functions may overlap. Normally, the extreme pressure additives have high load capacity, while anti-wear additives are good at wear control.

Sulfur series (sulfided olefins) > Phosphorus series (such as phosphate esters) > Chlorine series (such as chlorinated paraffin)

Q: What are the active temperatures of the AW additives & EP additives?

A: Different types of extreme pressure anti-wear agents have different activation temperature ranges:

chlorine series: 180 ~ 420 ℃, phosphorus series: 200 ~ 620 ℃, and sulfur series: 600 ~ 1000 ℃.

Q: May I have an EP/AW sample for evaluation?

A: Yes, samples are available.
Please contact Chours sales engineers for the oil additives you are interested in.

Q: What is a Four Ball Test?

A: The most commonly used EP & AW performance test evaluation method is the Four-Ball Test, which is used to evaluate the oil additive's ability to resist welding and extreme pressure failure under high load.

Q: What are the main anti-wear additives in engine oil?

A:  The main anti-wear additives used in engine oils are designed to protect metal surfaces by forming protective films, including:

1. Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP)
2. Molybdenum Dialkyldithiocarbamate (MoDTC)
3. Organic Phosphates & Phosphites
4. Borate Esters
5. Calcium & Magnesium Sulfonates (Detergents with Anti-Wear).

Normally, they work together in a designed formula.
