Why Neutral Barium Sulfonate for Rust Preventive Oils

Chorus 404 is a high-molecular-weight, oil-soluble neutral barium petroleum sulfonate. It is manufactured by neutralizing heavy alkylbenzene sulfonic acid with barium hydroxide. It offers the following performance properties:

 

1. Neutral, Mild, and Excellent Compatibility

Neutral pH of 7–8 prevents metal corrosion and avoids reactions with acidic components in formulations. Excellent compatibility with both mineral oil and synthetic base oils. Non-corrosive to steel, brass, copper, aluminum alloys, zinc, and other metals, making it ideal for precision components comprising multiple metals.

 

2. Humidity Resistance, Salt Spray Resistance, and Excellent Water Resistance

 

Humidity cabinet test (49±1℃, relative humidity above 95%, 72h): Grade A for 10# steel sheet, Grade 1 for 62# brass sheet.
Provides effective metal protection even in severe salt spray environments;
Saltwater immersion test (25±1℃,24h): No visible corrosion on either 45# steel or 62# brass sheets.

 

3. Broad Multi-Metal Compatibility

 

Outstanding anti-rust performance on ferrous metals (carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron).
Non-corrosive to non-ferrous metals (brass, copper, aluminum alloys, zinc), delivering effective protection.

5. Excellent oil solubility and lighter color for easy handling

Chorus 404 neutral barium sulfonate is a brown liquid, lighter in color and more oil-soluble than solid T701. It supports direct liquid pumping and can be blended into base oils at 60-75℃, eliminating the tedious high-temperature melting process required for solid products.
