How To Test The Anti-Rust Performance Of Rust Stop Oil? A Brief Understanding Of Salt Spray Test
Leave a message
Salt spray test and Humidity cabinet test are the commonly used methods for testing anti-rust performance of rust-preventive oils. Here we mainly talk about the salt spray test.
What is the salt spray test?
Salt spray test is an experiment that artificially simulates the atmospheric salt spray environment and is a test technology used to assess the corrosion resistance of products.
Why do we need to conduct a salt spray test? Is a natural rust test workable?
Generally, under natural conditions, the period for verifying the rust resistance of a rust-preventive is very long, which greatly affects the preventive oil development cycle.
The salt spray test is an accelerated corrosion resistance evaluation method for an artificial atmosphere. Using the more severe environmental conditions created artificially, in the salt spray test chamber, the temperature, humidity, pH, etc. are controlled to evaluate the salt spray corrosion resistance of the product. Compared with the natural environment, the NaCl concentration in the artificial simulated salt spray environment can be several times or dozens of times the salt spray content in the general natural environment, which increases the corrosion rate and can get the evaluation results in a short time.
e.g.
A corrosion test in a natural exposure environment - we may take one year to get the testing result. But with a corrosion test in a salt spray cabinet, we may have the test result in only 24 hours. Generally, according to the industrial standards:
Neutral salt spray test 24h ≈ 1 year in natural environment

Chorus® supplies a selection of rust stop additive packages; the user just needs to blend the additives with base oils to get the wanted finished rust stop oils.
e.g: Rust Preventive Additive Package Chorus-7010, which has a Salt Spray performance:
|
Chorus-7010, wt% |
ISO 30 base oil |
ASTM B-117, Salt Spray |
|
10.0 |
90.0 |
> 50 hours |
Theoretically, a 50-hour salt spray test pass means that the Chorus® rust preventive can ensure 1-2 years of rust resistance in the natural environment.
