How do use the Rust Preventive Additives? The Applications of Rust Preventive Additives (1)

Application of rust inhibitors

The application object of oil-soluble rust inhibitors is to modulate rust preventive oils and grease. Rust preventive oil can be divided into two categories based on its purpose: Storage preventive oil and Lubricant Rust Preventive oil.

Storage rust preventive oil is mainly used to prevent rust and corrosion of surfaces for semi-finished products, parts, components or complete machines during storage and transportation mechanical processing.

rust preventive lubricating oil can be divided into 2 types:

01. Rust prevention as the priority and lubrication as the auxiliary
02. Lubrication as the priority and rust prevention as the auxiliary.

According to Standard SH/T 0692 "Rust Preventive Oil", Rust Preventive Oils are divided into five types:

  • Anti-fingerprint type rust preventive oil
  • Solvent dilution type rust preventive oil
  • Rust preventive grease
  • Lubricant type rust preventive oil
  • Vapor phase rust preventive oil

Anti-fingerprint type rust preventive oil

Anti-fingerprint type rust preventive oil is also known as displacement-type rust preventive oil.

The displacement type rust prevention oil can replace the hand sweat that has already adhered to the metal surface. That is, the hand sweat that has previously adhered to the metal surface is repelled from the metal surface by coating the displacement-type rust prevention oil, thus preventing the metal from being corroded by hand sweat. Applying replacement rust prevention oil, can also prevent the metal surface from getting wet with sweat due to contact with human hands.
In addition, before sealing metal parts, replacement rust preventive oil can be used to clean the surface of the parts from hand sweat and similar dirt.
In the process of mechanical manufacturing, the processing and transfer of workpieces inevitably come into contact with human hands. To prevent metal corrosion caused by hand sweat, replacement rust preventive oil must be used between processes.
Replacement-type rust prevention oil is generally composed of sulfonates with strong adsorption properties as the main rust prevention additive, with low viscosity requirements. It is often diluted with kerosene or gasoline, so the use site should have safety production facilities such as ventilation and fire prevention.

A typical replacement rust preventive oil is suitable for rust prevention and short-term storage during the processing of non-ferrous and ferrous metals. Its formula is shown in the Table.

A Formula of Replacement Anti-Rust Oil
Item Composition wt %
Barium Sulfonate 5--7
Lanolin magnesium soap 3--4
Span-80 0.9
Benzotriazole 0.02--0.05
No.10 Mechanical oil 12--15
Kerosene Remain

Solvent Diluted Rust Preventive Oil

Solvent diluted rust preventive oil is a type of anti-rust oil that is dissolved in a suitable fraction of petroleum solvent and mixed with film-forming materials, anti-rust agents, etc. It is coated on metal surfaces at room temperature and forms a uniform anti-rust film layer after the solvent evaporates. It has good resistance to salt spray and moisture heat for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals and is suitable for long-term sealing and anti-rust of mechanical products, military weapons components, tools and instruments, etc.

According to the properties of the oil film, it is further divided into two types: hard film anti-rust oil and soft film anti-rust oil.

Hard Film Anti-Rust Oil

Hard Film Anti-Rust Oil leaves a dry and hard solid film on the metal surface after the solvent evaporates, this film can keep for a long anti-rust period. The metal parts coated with this type of anti-rust oil can be stored outdoors and it is suitable for large steel parts such as pipelines. This hard film can be removed with gasoline or kerosene.
Formula of hard film anti-rust oil

  • Film-forming materials include asphalt, oxidized asphalt, indene resin, petroleum resin, and tert butylphenol formaldehyde resin;
  • Rust inhibitors include sulfonates (barium sulfonate and calcium sulfonate), oxidized petroleum grease barium soap, and lanolin, etc;
  • Solvent includes solvent gasoline (120 and 200 # gasoline).
