Different conditions-how to choose antiwear hydraulic oil?
Leave a message
There is a wide variety of anti-wear hydraulic oils on the market, and improper selection can lead to component corrosion, lubrication failure, and system malfunctions. Beyond viscosity grade, differences in additive systems are a key consideration in the selection process.
There is a variety of anti-wear hydraulic oils on the market, and improper choosing of hydraulic oils may lead to component corrosion, lubricant failure, and system malfunctions.
In addition to the viscosity degree, hydraulic oil additives are the core element for anti-wear hydraulic oil selection.
The types of hydraulic oils
According to the base oil, hydraulic oils can be divided into mainly 3 types: mineral oil type hydraulic oil, synthetic hydraulic fluid, and bio-based hydraulic oil.
- Mineral oil-based products are based on petroleum-refined mineral oils, are low-cost, have wide applications, and make up 85% of the total amount of hydraulic oils. It's suitable for the majority of industrial and construction machinery hydraulic systems.
- Synthetic hydraulic fluids: through chemical synthesis, they have excellent performance, such as high temperature resistance, fire resistance, and long service life. Water-glycol fire-resistant hydraulic oil, phosphate esters (HFDR), and polyol esters (HFDU) hydraulic fluids are suitable for systems with special requirements for high pressure, high temperatures, or proximity to fire sources.
- Bio-based oil-type hydraulic fluid: biodegradable, environmentally friendly, but with a high cost, which is suitable for environmentally sensitive areas, such as forestry or agricultural machinery, or equipment operating near water sources.
The hydraulic oils used in hydraulic systems are mostly paraffinic mineral oils. Paraffinic-based hydraulic oils use paraffinic oil as the base oil and are formulated with appropriate hydraulic oils after refining.

The additives in hydraulic oils can be divided into 2 types:
Used to improve the hydraulic oils' chemical performance, such as anti-oxidation agents and rust-preventive additives.
The other type is used to promote the hydraulic oils' physical performance, such as oil thickeners and anti-wear additives.
Paraffinic-based hydraulic oils have good lubricity but poor fire resistance.
Therefore, non-flammable hydraulic oils (water-content types, synthetic types) are used to meet requirements-such as high-temperature resistance, thermal stability, non-corrosiveness, non-volatility, and fire resistance-for equipment including rolling mills, die-casting machines, and extrusion presses.
The comparisons among 3 types of hydraulic oil additives
As the energy transmission medium in hydraulic systems, hydraulic oil can be divided into zinc-containing anti-wear additive and non-zinc hydraulic oil.
Zinc-containing oils are classified as ash-containing anti-wear hydraulic oils, while zinc-free oils are classified as ashless anti-wear hydraulic oils.
