Dissolving OCP: Lubricant Thickener Dissolution Process & Parameter Guide

As a high-quality lubricant thickener, OCP offers reliable thickening, excellent thermal-oxidative stability, and seamless compatibility with various lubricant additives-making it the ideal choice for stable viscosity control in multigrade engine oils across diverse operating conditions. So, in lubricating oil? Chorus provides a detailed breakdown.

What is OCP?

OCP is what most formulators reach for when they need to lift viscosity index. Add it to a light base oil and the oil won't thin out as much in the heat or stiffen up as much in the cold - which is just another way of saying it covers a broader temperature range.

As a viscosity index improver, ethylene-propylene copolymer (OCP) cannot dissolve rapidly in raw rubber form in ambient-temperature lubricant base oils. It requires a heated shearing process to swell and disperse in the base oil, forming a homogeneous solution.

Ethylene-Propylene Copolymer (OCP) dissolves in lubricating oil (base oil) primarily following the "like dissolves like" principle (as a non-polar polymer, OCP readily dissolves in non-polar or weakly polar base oils). Heating and mechanical agitation are required to accelerate the dissolution process. The specific dissolution steps and operational key points are as follows:

Preprocessing
Cut gel-like rubber blocks into small fragments. Due to its "cold flow" characteristics, the fragments must be stored separately to prevent re-agglomeration.

Solvent Selection
Base oils compatible with Ethylene-Propylene Copolymer (such as mineral oils, PAO, etc.) must be selected. Avoid using polar solvents (such as esters) or highly polar oils, as they can cause rubber swelling issues or complete failure to dissolve.

Preheating the Base Oil
Add the lubricating oil (base oil, such as mineral oil SN 150 or PAO) into the blending kettle, heat to an initial temperature (typically 70℃–90℃), and agitate uniformly.

Adding the Rubber
Add the Ethylene-Propylene Copolymer (such as MX 4006 granular form or J-0010 solid rubber) into the blending kettle while maintaining continuous agitation.

Heating and Agitation: Heat the mixture to the target dissolution temperature (e.g., 120℃~130℃) and maintain continuous agitation at a constant temperature (e.g., for 2 hours) to allow the rubber.

Dilution and Cooling: Once dissolution is complete, add the remaining base oil to dilute, then continue stirring (e.g., for 1 hour) to adjust the final viscosity. Subsequently, cool the mixture down to a suitable temperature (e.g., 80℃) for storage or testing.

Process Parameters for the Dissolution Process

Dissolution Time
Initial dissolution is complete when OCP is fully dissolved in the base oil. Full dissolution can be confirmed by inspecting for rubber lumps during tank transfer or sieving, or when the viscosity stabilizes. For the first batch, periodic sampling should be conducted to establish the typical dissolution duration; subsequent batches can then be sampled based on this timeframe to ensure complete dissolution before transfer. If undissolved material remains, continue sampling until full dissolution is confirmed.

Dissolution Temperature:

Recommended minimum range:

120℃ to 130℃(or 120℃ to 140℃) in a dissolution kettle with an effective nitrogen purge).

Dissolved OCP Concentration:
Recommended concentration: 8%–12%.

Concentration too high:
High viscosity leads to slow dissolution, pumping difficulties, blending challenges, incomplete dissolution, excess batch processing or excessive diluent oil requirements, and risk of kettle overflow during dilution.

Concentration too low:
Requires excessive oil to be heated in the kettle, or makes it difficult to achieve target product viscosity.

Storage Temperature:

Recommended pumping:
90–95°C; long-term storage (8 weeks): ≤80°C.

Temperature too high:
free water may cause boiling over; if held for more than 48 hours, the material is prone to deterioration (color darkening, viscosity loss).Excessive temperature.

Temperature too low:
High viscosity causes pumping difficulties, slow blending, and sluggish transport via tank trucks.

Materials of Construction:

Conventional base oil engineering materials (such as carbon steel and most metals) can be used. However, rubber, rubber-lined equipment, and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) should be avoided.

Recommended Dissolution Kettle Configuration:

Top-mounted turbine vigorous agitator (can be paired with a high-shear recirculation pump to shorten dissolution time; use a smaller kettle when power density is sufficient to prevent rubber block agglomeration).

Connected rubber block feeding system (conveyor belt, bag opener, and rubber cutter to slice rubber blocks into at least 10 smaller pieces; insoluble packaging film and bags must be removed prior to feeding to prevent contamination and filtration difficulties).

The kettle should be equipped with an exhaust duct, along with a sampling port, a discharge pump sized for high viscosity, and a 50–30μm inline filter (to remove particulate sheds and other impurities; if the base oil color is unstable at dissolution temperatures, a nitrogen purge is required).

Agitation Recommendations:

A top-mounted turbine agitator (approx. 3 3kW/m³) combined with a high-shear recirculation pump (15-minute turnover rate) is recommended. With appropriate equipment, dissolution time can be reduced to 8 hours (total cycle time of 12 hours), down from over 16 hours.

Power input should generally exceed 1 $\text{kW/m}^3$ unless special high-efficiency blades are used to prevent agglomeration. At lower energy inputs, rubber blocks must be shredded, and smaller pieces yield better results.
