How antiwear additive extend gear oil lifespan?

Friction causes about 1/3 of the world's energy to be lost. And it's also one of the primary reasons that causes the failure of gear and device. Lubricity is an effective method to reduce wear and avoid tear. It is necessary to use an antiwear oil additive to promote lubricity performance, which is used to reduce friction resistance between metal surfaces and avoid material wear.

Why does antiwear oil additive matter in gear oil?

The development of industry has promoted a higher antiwear performance demand for gear oil. Using an excellent antiwear agent is an efficient way to improve the lubricity, reduce wear, and improve equipment lifespan.

Antiwear additive can deposit on the metal surface to provide lubricity and repair, which can form a protective film to enhance surface hardness.

Some lubricant antiwear oil additive not only has excellent antiwear and extreme pressure (EP) performance, but also good anti-oxidation and corrosion inhibitor properties.

The core functions of lubricant anti-wear oil additives:

  • Forming a chemical reaction film on the metal surface under high temperature and high pressure, the film is usually a phosphate or sulfide film.
  • Reducing the direct connection between metals and the friction coefficient.
  • Improving the oil film carrying capacity and prolonging the lifespan of engine parts.

The kinds of antiwear oil additives

The common antiwear agent includes chlorinated EP additives, sulfurized EP additives, phosphorus EP additives, metal salt EP additives, borate EP additives, and overbased borate EP additives.

When the contact pressure of the friction surface is high, the concave and convex points on the surface of the two metals come into contact with each other, generating local high pressure and high temperature.

At this time, the active antiwear EP additive with active sulfur, phosphorous, or chlorine compounds will undergo a chemical reaction on the metal surface, and form a low shear strength metal protection film with sulfur, phosphat,e or chlorine.

The film can separate the two metals to prevent metal wear and sintering.

Chlorine antiwear oil additive

Chlorine antiwear additive has a good synergy effect with phosphate and sulfur additives, and it's one of the earliest used antiwear additives.

And the commonly used are aliphatic chlorides and aromatic chlorides.

Recently, with the improvement of people's environmental protection awareness and the increasing strict regulations, the use of chlorine antiwear additive gradually reduced because of toxicity and environmental protection issues.

Sulfur antiwear oil additive

Sulfurized additives provide an outstanding extreme pressure (EP) performance, making them suitable for high-loading and high-temperature conditions, which is commonly used as an antiwear EP oil additive in lubricant grease.

With the application of highly refined API II, III base oil, and synthetic base oil such as polyα-olefins and GTL (natural gas oil), modified EP and antiwear additives are required. The vulcanized products need to have higher thermal stability, low corrosiveness, and excellent solubility.

Phosphorous antiwear oil additive

Phosphorous antiwear additive has the functions of anti-pressure, anti-wear, and anti-oxidation, high thermal stability, low corrosiveness and good compatibility with other functional additives.

Except used as an antiwear and EP additive, ashless phosphorous additive can also be used as an anti-oxidation additive, a rust inhibitor, a metal deactivator, and a detergent.

Chorus solution: advanced antiwear additive T321

Anti-wear additive plays an indispensable role in gear oil; therefore, it's important to choose a suitable oil additive.

Chorus is a professional lubricant additives supplier in China. We can provide you with different functions and applications of anti-wear additives, such as ZDDP, sulfur-containing additives, phosphorus-containing additives, chloride-containing additives, and other EP/AW additives.

Sulfurized additive is particularly effective in gear oils and is beneficial to prolong the service life of devices.

Among these anti-wear agents, the widely used in Chorus is sulfurized isobutylene(SIB)--antiwear additive T321.

When the engine system is operating, sulfurized isobutylene enters the high-temperature and high-pressure friction area with lubricant oil. At this time, it decomposes the active sulfur elements, which can react with the metal surface and form a dense metal sulfurized film. This film is helpful to prevent the direct connection between metals and decrease wear to protect engine parts and prolong the lifespan.

Antiwear additive T321 has an excellent oil solubility, excellent antiwear performance, and a high sulfur content of 40-48%. You can use it in gear oil, hydraulic oil, and metalworking fluid.

Except for sulfurized isobutylene, Chorus can provide you with rust inhibitors and anti-wear additives, which are widely used in vehicle and industrial lubricant oil.
