What is Polyisobutylene Succinic Anhydride (PIBSA)?
Chemical name: Polyisobutylene Succinic Anhydride
The molecular structure of PIBSA consists of two parts:
Long lipophilic chain: polyisobutylene part. PIB is an oil-soluble hydrocarbon polymer with a relatively high molecular weight (usually in the range of 800-2300 g/mol), providing oil solubility and steric hindrance.
Polar head: Succinic anhydride part. This is a highly polar, highly reactive anhydride group that gives the molecule polarity, surface activity, and reactivity.

How to produce Polyisobutylene Succinic Anhydride PIBSA?
There are two main processes. Nowadays, In China, the thermal addition method has become the mainstream development trend due to its chlorine-free and eco-friendly.
Thermal addition method:
Highly active polyisobutylene (with high terminal vinylidene content >80%) is directly reacted with excess maleic anhydride at high temperature (usually 220-250°C). Now, in the Chinese market, the main HRPIB (Highly active polyisobutylene) are HPRIB 1000, 1300, 2300.
Chlorination addition method:
Polyisobutylene (relatively low activity requirement) is first chlorinated at a lower temperature to produce chlorinated polyisobutylene. Chlorinated polyisobutylene is then reacted with maleic anhydride to produce PIBSA.
What are the main applications of PIBSA?
PIBSA is usually not used directly as a finished additive. Its main application is an intermediate for the ashless dispersant -Polyisobutylene Succinimide (PIBSI), which is crucial in the formulation of synthetic lubricants.
PIBSA can also be used to synthesize:
Ashless rust inhibitors: PIBSA can react with alcohols, ethylene oxide, etc., to form ester derivatives, which are used as rust inhibitors.
Emulsifiers: In some metalworking fluids and industrial cleaning agents, PIBSA derivatives can be used as emulsifiers.
Fuel additive intermediates: Used to synthesize detergents (such as polyisobutylene amine, PIBA) in gasoline and diesel to prevent deposits on injection nozzles and intake valves.
