What Is PAG/Ester Compressor Fluid? Components Explained
Leave a message
PAG Synthetic Compressor Oil is a fully synthetic air compressor lubricant formulated with a blend of polyalkylene glycol (PAG) and synthetic ester as base oils. It is widely used in severe operating conditions due to its excellent carbon-deposition resistance, extended oil drain intervals, low volatility, and outstanding viscosity-temperature performance.

PAG: EO/PO copolymer PAG is selected for higher formulation flexibility, accounting for 70%–80% of the PAG ester compressor oil .
POE: Saturated polyol esters-such as pentaerythritol esters (PE) and trimellitate esters-are selected, accounting for 15%–20%.
Additive Package: An additive package formulated specifically for air compressor oils is selected to provide antioxidant, anti-wear, and rust/corrosion inhibition properties, accounting for 5%–10%.

What are the advantages of PAG synthetic compressor oil?
1. Excellent carbon-deposition/varnish resistance, extending oil drain intervals
PAG molecules are highly polar and inherently possess excellent detergency, making them resistant to carbon deposition on high-temperature metal surfaces. The thermal oxidation products of synthetic esters are soluble in the oil and do not deposit as hard varnish. Working synergistically, they maintain cleanliness even under severe operating conditions with discharge temperatures ≥ 180°C, thereby extending oil change intervals and the service life of the air compressor (up to over 8,000 hours) and reducing labor costs.
2. Outstanding viscosity-temperature performance
PAG synthetic compressor oil possesses excellent viscosity-temperature properties, ensuring a smooth startup at low temperatures and preventing the oil from thinning excessively at high temperatures. This enables proper lubrication across a wide temperature range, reducing equipment wear.
3. Good seal compatibility
PAG base oils are incompatible with nitrile rubber, whereas POE exhibits excellent compatibility. The introduction of the ester component effectively mitigates the swelling issues of pure PAG on nitrile rubber seals.
4. Low evaporation loss and low oil consumption
Due to the high flash points of PAG and POE (usually ≥ 230°C), their evaporation loss is extremely low. This leads to low oil consumption during operation, which in practice is only 30% to 50% of that of mineral oils.
5. Good environmental performance
POE (polyol ester) is biodegradable and environmentally friendly, meeting the requirements of industrial environmental regulations.
Although PAG synthetic compressor oils possess excellent carbon-deposition resistance and extended oil drain intervals, PAG and esters will still oxidize slowly in high-temperature, oxygen-rich environments. While the performance of PAG and synthetic esters is far superior to that of mineral oils, base oil ≠ finished oil. It is essential to add an additive package to fill the performance gaps that the base oils alone cannot address, thereby ensuring the oil achieves more stable and outstanding performance.
