Why does PAG base oil outperform mineral oil /PAO?
Leave a message
Due to its unique molecular structure and chemical properties, Polyalkylene Glycol (PAG) is irreplaceable in many key fields. Especially in extreme working conditions or special demand situations, its performance advantages exceed those of mineral oil or PAO additives.
Performance comparison: the three core advantages of PAG
High temperature stability and viscosity index advantages.
The viscosity index of PAG is as high as 160-250, and some high-end products can reach up to 400, which is far exceeding that of PAO (120-150) and mineral oil (80-120). Under high-temperature working conditions, the oxidation stability of PAG is significantly better than that of PAO. The carbon-oxygen-ether bond can still keep a stable structure at extreme temperatures, reduce sludge formation, and extend the oil change cycle, which is 3-5 times that of mineral oils.
Lubricity performance
The extreme pressure performance and micro-pitting resistance of PAG far exceed those of PAO. And the ether bond in its molecular structure endows it with a low coefficient (0.03-0.5), which is lower 30% than that of PAO (0.06-0.8). And PAG is particularly suitable for lubricating worm gears, gears, etc.
Environmentally friendly and biodegradable
The biodegradability of PAG is over 80-90% and is 3-8 times that of PAO (20%-30%) and mineral oil (less than 10%), complying with the EU EC1227/2008 environment protection regulation. The hydrolytic stability of PAG is better than that of PAO, which can absorb 0.7% moisture content without losing its effectiveness in a humid environment.

Application: the unsubstitutability of PAG base oil
Compressor oils
PAG lubricating additive is widely used for compressor oils, especially in the case of using hydrocarbon gases. Not miscible with hydrocarbon gases, PAG can avoid viscosity dilution, bubbles, and high oil-carrying capacity.
Meanwhile, PAG also has other excellent performances.
- Excellent high-temperature stability, it is less likely to form carbon deposits and coke at high temperature, which is beneficial to enhance the working safety of the compressor at high temperature.
- Super adhesion performance: PAG lubricant additives can keep good liquidity under a special low temperature.
- Excellent thermal and chemical stability ensures the long term operation.
- Better cleanliness helps to reduce the cleaning costs.
- Super high viscosity index can satisfy the wide range of operating temperatures.
- PAG additives have an excellent hydrolytic stability; the absorbed water doesn't undergo chemical reactions or emulsify.
Gear oils
PAG lubricating oil additives are suitable for worm gear oil, industrial gear oil, gearbox bearing oil, etc.
PAG has excellent extreme pressure and high load-bearing capacity, which is beneficial to prolong the lifespan of lubricant oil as well as reduce the temperature and energy costs during operation.
And compared with mineral oil and PAO, PAG base oils have their unique features.
- Excellent extreme pressure and high load-bearing capacity.
- Better anti-pitting performance effectively extends the lifespan of PAG lubricating oil.
- Excellent high-oxidation stability helps to inhibit the formation of sludge and carbon deposits.
- Higher viscosity index and excellent lubricity performance can reduce the sliding and rolling friction between gears.
- With a wide range of operating temperatures (-30~200℃), there is no need to change oil seasonally. And PAG base oil has lower operating costs.
- An extremely low coefficient of friction effectively helps to reduce the operating temperature and significantly lowers the energy consumption of the equipment.

Because of the excellent high-temperature stability, lubricity, cleanliness, and environmental friendliness, PAG polyether is significantly superior to mineral oil and PAO oils in many high-end applications. With the enhancement of people's environmental awareness and the government's emphasis on environmental protection, polyalkylene glycol synthetic base oils will have a wider application in China's lubricant industry.
Chorus can provide you with polyalkylene glycol (APG) synthetic base oil for different fields of use, such as gear base oils, air compressor oils, refrigeration oil, high-temperature chain base oil, etc.
Di-capped polyalkylene glycol, specially designed for refrigeration applications.
Compared with uncapped PAG, di-capped polyalkylene glycol has an excellent hydrolytic stability. It can reduce hygroscopicity and potential problems related to degradation caused by ice and moisture in capillaries. Di-capped PAG has an excellent miscibility with R-134a and good miscibility with various HFC and HFO refrigerants (including R-404A, R-410A, R-407C, and R-1234yf).
PAG gear base oil has excellent thermal stability and a longer service life. And compared with other hydrocarbons, it can improve energy efficiency and lower the working temperature.
Polyalkylene glycol (APG) generates almost no sludge, which ensures the lubricant system of equipment that uses polyalkylene glycol remains clean for a long time and has a longer service life.
The specially designed water-based PAG provides an excellent load-bearing performance, reducing micro-pitting corrosion. And PAG has a good thermal conductivity over a wide temperature range, effectively extending the service life of the gearbox.
Special PAG for compressor oils.
Compressor oil PAG has good wear resistance and reliable lubricity, which can satisfy the longer service life.
It also has a low solubility of hydrocarbon gases and a low viscosity loss, thus enabling the formation of a stronger lubricating film on the screw, ensuring that the two rotors achieve excellent sealing at the meshing point.
