Why Synthetic Ester Base Oils Are Ideal for Air Compressor Lubricants

Synthetic ester air compressor oils are formulated for harsh operating environments. Their exceptionally low volatility and superior resistance to carbon buildup help maintain equipment stability under high temperatures and pressures.

Air compressors are power equipment that compress atmospheric air into high-pressure gas; air compressor oil is the lifeblood that maintains their efficient operation-specifically responsible for lubrication, cooling, sealing, and self-cleaning.

 

Air compressor oils are prone to oxidation, emulsification, sludging, and coking. In particular, piston compressors operating under high temperatures and high pressures are susceptible to open flames, while screw compressors face oxidation challenges caused by condensation water.


Facing extreme operating conditions above 200°C and high pressures up to 350 MPa, mineral oils are no longer adequate due to their temperature limit of 160°C. In contrast, synthetic air compressor oils, with their superior thermal stability, effectively eliminate carbon deposit risks and ensure long-term, stable equipment operation.

Strong Carbon Deposit Solubility

The polarity of the ester group gives the oil a natural ability to dissolve carbon deposits and sludge, effectively reducing coking.

 

Low Evaporation Loss

Its evaporation loss under high-temperature and high-pressure operating conditions is far lower than that of mineral oils.

 

Superior Lubrication Performance

The polar functional groups of the ester base can form a strong adsorbed oil film on friction surfaces, protecting them against wear and extending oil drain intervals.

 

Good Biodegradability

As environmentally friendly lubricants, they offer high biodegradation rates.

Polyol Esters (POE)


Produced by reacting neopentyl polyols (such as TMP, NPG, and PE) with fatty acids, these are the most widely used synthetic ester base oils in the field of air compressor oils. They can handle operating temperatures above 200°C and offer oil drain intervals 3 to 5 times longer than those of mineral oils (8,000 to 16,000 hours), making them suitable for high-temperature operating conditions and industrial applications requiring extended maintenance cycles.

 

Trimellitate Esters (TME)


A class of synthetic ester base fluids featuring high flash points, low volatility, excellent high-temperature oxidation stability, and good high-temperature detergency, making them an ideal choice for air compressor oils in high-temperature environments.

 

Chorus TMP108A is valued for its thermal stability, high viscosity index, and detergency, which help improve the carbon deposit control and volatility performance of synthetic engine oils.

 

Chorus PAG-Ester Air Compressor Oil Additive Package is formulated with a variety of specialized additives.
