Functions & Benefits of S-content additives in Gear Oil Additives.
Leave a message
Gear oil additives are special lubricants in gear transmission devices, which are composed of base oil and other functional additives. With the features of heavy load, high local temperature, and strong impact load when gears are operating. This requires gears to have the function of high extreme pressure (EP) to prevent sintering and scratching of the gear sets.
What's the chemical composition of gear oil additives?
The chemical composition of gear oil additives is different according to the other uses of functions of gear lubricant additives. Generally speaking, the chemical composition of gear oil additive package includes Extreme Pressure EP/AW (Anti-wear) agents, antioxidants, rust & corrosion inhibitors, metal deactivators, anti-foam agents, viscosity index improver (VII), and pour point depressants.
Sulfur-based extreme pressure anti-wear agents are widely used extreme pressure anti-wear agents, mainly including nitrogen-containing derivatives of sulfuric acid, molybdenum sulfuric acid, sulfurized animal oil, sulfurized olefins, polysulfides, etc.
Sulfur-containing extreme pressure anti-wear agents can form an adsorption film on the metal surface to reduce the friction between metal surfaces.
Taking disulfide as an example, as the load increases, the friction temperature rises. At the moment when the oil film at the friction point is about to be destroyed, the S-S bond in the disulfide breaks, causing the organic sulfide to react with the metal to form a mercaptan iron covering film, which plays an anti-wear role.
One of the main components of the current mainstream EP-type gear oil compound is Sulfurized Olefin, which is used as a gear oil additive for car and industrial production. Especially under heavy load, the role of S-content of EP additives is the greatest.
In the early 1990s, Lubrizol applied the isobutylene sulfide products to gear oil additives components and metalworking oil, which received good results and has been used up to since.
Isobutylene sulfide is an excellent extreme pressure additive with good oil-solubility and high sulfur content (sulfur content over 40%). It exhibits good abrasion resistance under high-speed impact loads and shows minimal corrosion to silver and copper. Sulfurized Isobutylene has good thermal stability, excellent rust prevention, and anti-foam characteristics. The amount of Isobutylene sulfide is 3-5% in hyperbolic gear oil and extreme pressure industrial gear oil.

Chorus can provide various gear oil additives, which are mainly formulated from S-content lubricant additives, such as Sulfurized Olefin, namely T321 and accounting for about 50-70% of the components of gear oil additives.
Antiwear EP Additive Sulfurized Isobutylene T321
Chorus anti-wear EP additive sulfurized isobutylene T321 is commonly used for vehicle gear oils, industrial gear oils, and other lubricants. It has good performance of oil-soluble, anti-wear, and extreme pressure. Chorus gear lubricant oil has good compatibility with the base oil.
Chorus also supplied gear oil additive packages with meet the AGMA 9005 standard.
Multifunctional Gear Oil Additive Package T4218
Chorus T4218 is an environmental protection gear oil additive component. It's designed for vehicle gear oil and industrial gear oil, and it complies with the standard ANSI/AGMA 9005. T4218 has excellent load bearing, anti-scuffing, detergency, and antioxidant performance. Multifunctional Gear Oil Additive Package T4218 also has good performance in anti-corrosion and anti-foaming.
Chours also supplies an additive package for limited-slip gear oil
