In the lowest speed and high load gear transmission application, there is a lubricant state, which leads to failures due to adhesive wear. When the oil thickness is less than the rough peak of the metal surface, boundary lubrication will appear. And this is called a boundary state.
In order to deal with the wear problem under boundary state, the extreme pressure (EP) gear oil additive is developed.
What is extreme pressure gear oil?
When the gear is operating under heavy load, high temperature, and intense friction will occur on the meshing gears' surfaces, leading to wear and occlusal failure of the metal surface. After adding EP gear oil additives, when the temperature rises to a certain extent, the additives will have a chemical reaction on the metal surface and form a strong phosphide or sulfide protective film.
This film can bear high pressure, reduce the friction coefficient to prevent the direct connection of metals, and prolong the gear life span.
The EP additive is used to prevent adhesive wear and protect parts when the oil viscosity is not able to provide essential oil thickness.

How does the EP additive protect the gear from wear?
EP additives and gear oils work together to form a chemically bonded lubricating oil film. When driving, the inner gears and parts will move and touch each other, and produce wear. This wear will improve the gear oil's temperature to increase the chemical reaction in the gear oil EP additives.
With the temperature rising due to the moving of gears, the polar molecule in the extreme pressure (EP) will begin to connect with the differential's gear and metal components to form an EP protective film on the metal.
This will minimize the direct contact between metals that could cause deterioration or wear on the gear surface.
