What is "Reverse Solubility" of Water-soluble PAG (Polyalkylene glycol) in synthetic metalworking fluids? How does it work?
- At ambient temperature, Water Soluble PAG is completely soluble in water in synthetic machining fluids, it is a clear and transparent solution.
- When the metalworking fluid comes into contact with a hot tool or mold, its temperature rises above the Cloud Point of PAG, and the PAG becomes water-insoluble and precipitates from the solution to form small polymer droplets.
- The lubricant additives in the metalworking fluid are enriched at the interface between PAG and the water phase.
- PAG droplets preferentially wet the workpiece or the tool's surface, forming a concentrated PAG and lubricating additive layer. This PAG layer has excellent lubricity. It helps PAG to work with other additives.
- The metalworking fluid flows back to the recovery tank and returns to a clear and transparent solution at ambient temperature.
Chorus Lubricant Additive Co., Ltd specializes in providing high-quality PAGs for lubricants, metal working fluids, and other applications, Please contact us for the latest PAG price and a sample to evaluate the performance.

What is Cloud Point of water-soluble PAG?
When the solution of water-soluble PAG is cooled slowly, the certain temperature, the solution becomes cloudy or hazy in appearance, this temperature is called cloud point.
What are the advantages of PAG in synthetic metalworking fluids?
- PAG can provide excellent good lubricity and coolant for metalworking fluids.
- As a non-ionic surfactant, PAG can be used with cationic or anionic additives together in metalworking fluids.
- PAG has low reactivity and is not corrosive to common metals.
- PAG is truely soluble in water. The residue on the parts is in liquid and can be easily removed.
- PAG's biodegradability is relative slower than that of fatty acids, phosphates So the PAG metalworking fluids maintain a longer service life.
- PAG has low toxicity, it is safe for the environment and the machine operators.
- PAG synthetic metalworking fluids are stable in hard water, have low foaming properties.
Is Water-soluble PAG base oil corrosive to metals?
Generally, Water PAG is not corrosive to iron, or steel, but it has slight corrosion to copper and aluminum. Adding benzotriazole (BTA), benzotriazole derivatives or other metal deactivators can inhibit copper corrosion effectively.
Is water-soluble PAG safe to use in metalworking fluids? Is it toxic?
Generally, Polyalkylene glycols (PAG) has a low degree of toxicity. PAGs have been approved for a variety of uses where they might come into contact with food.
Is PAG biodegradable?
Generally, Polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) are biodegradable, but the speed of degradation depends on molecular weight. The lower molecular weight polyalkylene glycols biodegrade very readily. The higher molecular weight PAG degradation is relatively slow.
The water-soluble polyalkylene glycols have very low effects and a very low risk to environment. They are safe and eco-friendly.
