The main functions of antifreeze additives are mainly to prevent the engine from freezing in low temperatures and from gasifying at high temperatures.

  • Anti-freeze: the water's freezing point is at 0 ℃. Normally the antifreeze additives can reach to -60~-25℃. It can prevent the coolant from freezing and cracking the radiator in winter to ensure the normal operation of the engine.
  • Anti-corrosion: the cooling system includes the metals like steel, aluminium alloy, cast iron, using deionized water and additives can prevent these metals from corrosion.
  • Anti-boiling: the boiling point of antifreeze additive is higher than that of water. The water's boiling point is at 100℃ and the antifreeze's boiling point is over 106℃, which can prevent the engine from local overheating and damage the cylinder head and cylinder gasket.
  • Anti-scaling: coolant additive has an excellent performance of anti-scaling, which can prevent scale formation and keep the engine cooling system heat dissipation efficient. This can protect the engine from failure due to high temperature.
  • Lubrication & sealing: antifreeze additive can provide the engine cooling system with essential lubrication, especially for the pump's bearings and sealing element, which is helpful to reduce wear, avoid water leak and prolong the pump's life.

Understand antifreeze additives: types and choice

The common antifreeze is monohydric alcohols coolant additives, dihydric alcohols antifreeze additives and tririhydric alcohols antifreeze additives.

Monohydric alcohols coolant additives has a large energy consumption and poor thermal stability, which limit their applications and have been gradually eliminated.

Dihydric alcohols antifreeze additives with a high boiling point and good thermal stability, which is the most widely used antifreeze additive.

Trihydric alcohols antifreeze additives owing to the corrosion problems such as glycerol have not been resolved.

 

Ethylene glycol's irreplaceability in antifreeze additives

Compared with propylene glycol, ethylene glycol has an indispensable role in antifreeze additives.

Although propylene glycol is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and has the function of decreasing freezing point, it is suitable for high-ends models or families with children or pets. Owing to the high price, the application of propylene glycol is limited.

In comparison with it, ethylene glycol is much cheaper and has a good stability in decreasing freezing point. It's low toxic, high boiling point, which can dissolute with water.

The common addition of ethylene glycol in antifreeze additive is usually at 40-60%.

It can be seen that adding ethylene glycol can decrease the freezing point greatly. Each time the ethylene glycol addition increases 10%, the freezing point decreases by about 8-10℃.

 

As a highly efficient antifreeze additive, ethylene glycol can decrease the freezing point greatly, which is helpful to prevent the engine cooling system from freezing under low temperatures.

Take the special coolant additive for Volkswagen vehicles as an example, the proportion of ethylene glycol can not below 40% to ensure the normal use of antifreeze. And when the antifreeze and water are both 50%, the antifreeze performance can reach -35 ℃.
